Take time to pause and breathe

Can you believe we are already half way through the first month of 2022? We often neglect to consciously pause, breathe and take stock of where we are at or how we are feeling, especially as the pace of life starts to accelerate once again. It can be easy to revert to old ways of 2021 and keep going, pushing through each day, without allowing yourself a few moments to stop and digest where you are at. Whatever part of the day allows you to have at least five to ten minutes of stillness, quiet and peace, plan that time into your schedule and use it to focus on your breathing. The key to consciously or mindfully breathing is to allow your body to feel each breath as it enters and leaves your body. Practicing mindful breathing each day is proven to increase wellbeing and vitality, so it’s definitely worth giving your body and mind this time and working on developing this habit over the coming year.
Each new year presents us with an opportunity to take stock. A life-audit if you will. We can see if there’s anything we can improve on? How many of us keep our new year resolutions anyway? Perhaps this year, instead of the usual ones, why not plan to help someone else instead? The best resolution we can make is to be kind to other people. The most gratifying feelings come from helping others. Maybe a worthwhile resolution might be to do just one thing that will make a difference to someone else.
There’s a well known quote which goes as follows: “I am the master of my own destiny. I am the captain of my soul”. I take it to mean that our lives are in our own hands to a great degree. Often we are guilty of waiting for our lives to happen instead of getting out there and proactively making things happen. For example in learning to prioritize goals we need to reach by making the most urgent goal a priority and once tasks become priorities they will get done. Try this technique before the end of January 2022.
